Divorce can have an impact on social security benefits. It can affect both the benefits of the former spouse and the individual who is divorced. In most cases, the divorced spouse is entitled to receive social security benefits based on the earnings of their ex-spouse if they were married for at least 10 years and are at least 62 years old. The divorced spouse can receive up to half of the ex-spouse’s benefit amount.
